Walking & Hiking

Walking, or hiking, is one of the most popular leisure activities and more and more Canadians are finding nature trails through ravines, forests, and conservation areas to be a beautiful and exhilarating way of spending a day with a friend, family or time to just get away by oneself. In a recent publication of the Bruce Trail News (Spring 1997), Robert Preidt writes on "how to plan a hike". The following are excerpts from that article.

The Essentials of Day Trips Footwear should be sturdy, provide firm support and have a sole that provides good traction and grip. Ensure that the boots are comfortable, before heading out on a long day hike. New boots should be broken in first with a series of short walks. Even if it is a dry day, make certain your boots are waterproofed, as there are at least one or two marshy areas encountered on any hike.

Many hikers recommend wearing a thin sock, especially polypropylene, beneath a heavy hiking sock. Packing an extra pair of socks makes good sense. The weather for the day will determine your clothing, however whatever the condition, clothing should be loose and comfortable and permit easy body motion.

Pack rain gear, if there is any indication in the forecast. On sunny days, wear a broad-brimmed hat and have sun screen. Bug juice or mesh garments are a must if it is insect season. Remember, many biting insects are attracted to dark clothing.

Water is essential, so plan on taking at least a couple litres of water per person on the hike, whether the forecast is for warm or cool weather. Dehydration can make you more susceptible to fatigue and even hypothermia, depending on the conditions.

Food is another good suggestion. A few trail bars and fruit are usually sufficient for a day hike.

All the items needed for a day hike can be carried in a fanny pack or daypack. Anyone interested in taking up hiking, however are hesitant to do so because of their unfamiliarity of the activity, or area to choose, should contact either the Niagara Bruce Trail Club or the Niagara Falls Nature Club. These clubs have experienced hikers who would be pleased to assist the novice get started. Both clubs have regularly scheduled hikes throughout the week in every season. See Nature Clubs in the Leisure Directory section of this Guide for the contact name and phone number and HAPPY HIKING!
