Purpose
The goal of the Summer Trillium Awards program is to Recognize and Encourage Outstanding Horticultural Displays for Public Viewing in the City of Niagara Falls.
The Committee
The Summer Trillium Awards Program is organized, promoted and implemented by the Summer Trillium Awards Committee, a sub-committee of The Park in the City Committee. It is the vision of The Park in the City Committee to encourage civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community participation.
Background
Each summer, volunteer Summer Trillium Award Judges tour the City of Niagara Falls to review and score outstanding curb side horticultural displays. Residential, Commercial (Hotels, Motels, Restaurants & Other), Multiple Residential, Places of Worship, Best Neighbourhoods and Best Bed & Breakfasts are all eligible properties that can be nominated by the home/property owner, tenant, neighbour and/or anyone passing by.
Properties are judged on principles of design, turf maintenance, diversity and quality of plant material, environmental issues, unique features and hardscaping. Properties which do not have turf are marked on a different scale, as such brown lawns (taking into account summer heat, drought, and water meters) are not penalized as long as turf is weeded and neatly edged and maintained. Summer Trillium Award Judges are trained volunteers; review the entire package including balance, colour and innovation and how the design fits in with the building and the rest of the property.
