Fire Prevention

The Fire Prevention Division enforces the requirements of the Ontario Fire Code, Fire Marshal's Act, Ontario Building Code (fire safety systems and devices), Municipal By-laws, Gasoline Handling Act, Propane Handling, Storage and Utilization Code as well as other Provincial, National and International Codes and Standards. Routine fire safety inspections are conducted to assure compliance with applicable laws. Owners or prospective owners can request on-site inspections, which carry a fee in accordance with City Policy.

Public Fire Safety Education is an extremely important method used to improve awareness. A school fire safety program has been conducted continuously in excess of forty years. This program now includes Learn Not to Burn, created by the National Fire Protection Association. Fire Prevention Officers conduct numerous lectures relating to fire safety, emergency evacuation, use of fire extinguishers and fire safety planning.

In an attempt to create a safer community, an outreach program titled Operation Fire Safe was developed. This program involves in-service fire fighting crews visiting all types of residential buildings. Information is provided on a wide range of fire safety topics. The purpose of Operation Fire Safe is to reduce the number of fires, injuries and deaths that occur in residential buildings. Each year in Ontario, 70% of fires occur in residential buildings and 90% of fire deaths result from these fires. This program has been adopted by many Fire Departments in Ontario.
