About Us

Coronation 50 Plus Recreation Centre

The Coronation 50 Plus Recreation Centre was originally formed in 1968 as the Greater Niagara Senior Citizen’s Association located at the Niagara Falls Badminton and Fitness Club. The Association became aware that to accommodate growth in participation and services they would need their own facility. The former Church of the Redeemer and the associated Manse on Summer St was purchased and renovated with financial assistance from the City and funds raised by the Greater Niagara Senior Citizen's Association. The facility was named Coronation Recreation Centre and it opened its doors in 1978. In 2002 the City of Niagara Falls took over the administration of programming and once again the name was changed to the Coronation 50 Plus Recreation Centre. With continued growth we recently expanded again in September of 2005 to offer additional programming at our satellite site, the MacBain Community Centre. Today the Coronation Centre operates under the department of Recreation and Culture.

The Coronation Centre operates on a membership basis. Anyone who is 50 years of age and older is eligible to become a member. The facilities at the Centre provide an opportunity for a variety of recreation, arts and cultural activities. Membership entitles one to participate in the programs and special events offered by paying a nominal drop-in fee or purchasing tickets. Our facility can improve your life in many ways and you will soon see the benefits of membership; such as making new friends, participation in a regular exercise routine, involvement in volunteer opportunities or enjoying a hot meal from our Café to name a few.

The Centre works with a twelve member volunteer Advisory Committee who represent and are voted in by the membership at the Annual General Meeting. Their goal is to provide suggestions and recommendations on the provision of programs, services and special events. A major factor in the successful operation of the Centre is the dedication and commitment of our volunteers. The Centre has many exciting volunteer opportunities available and we are confident that you will find a volunteer position that is a rewarding experience. Some of the volunteer areas include; Greeters, Special Events, Volunteer Instructors, Committees, Assistants for our gently used clothing store and help in our lunchroom Craft House Café .

The Coronation Centre is a facility committed to enhancing the quality of life and well being of those 50 years and over in the City of Niagara Falls. We presently serve over 2000 older adult men and women in the Niagara Region. With membership growth we are seeing a shift in programming to include evening classes to meet the needs of our younger active members and exercises that include strength and flexibility for our older adults.

The future of the Coronation Centre is bright and we will continue to support a healthy and active lifestyle. So make the decision to become involved with the Coronation Centre.
